Thanks John and Eddie,
I’ll have a go at trying to improve the opaque (one corner first maybe) and see how it goes.
One of the reasons I was considering having a go at changing the cracked screen with a new one is that the hood itself is in better condition than the other hood. Ideally I’d invest in getting a complete replacement/refurbished hood, targa panels and head lining, but as I mentioned in another thread a huge chunk of my petty cash (XJS fund) has been swallowed up replacing the oil cooler on my LHD Convertible recently – so seeking a way low cost way to improve the Cabriolet for this summer if I can.

Laurence JonesKeymasterHi Mark,
There are different types of Powder Coating, and there are ones that don’t use very high heat levels – indeed I’ve seen them demonstrated with a powder coated Coke bottle, and those bottles use quite a low melt temperature plastic.
It will need some testing (trial and error) but I’m hopeful. I’ll let you know 🙂
Laurence
Laurence JonesKeymasterHi Mark
Something I’ve considered is to have these items powder coated, as you can get chrome powder coating powder. You can mask items off and only powder coat sections – so might be possible with care to have chrome front face on black badges
I’m hoping to buy myself what’s required, for doing small items like the badges, sometime over the next month or so and give it a try myself, I’ll let you know.
Laurence JonesKeymasterHi Trevor,
If it means you can be comfortable driving your Cabriolet the distances you do, then it will be a great success.
Enjoy your tour around Ireland

Laurence JonesKeymasterReminder that this event is in just over a week’s time, and I need to know who’s going as space needs to be reserved for us.
Thanks,
Laurence
Laurence JonesKeymasterHi John,
You’ll find him there now – admin issue resolved 🙂

Laurence JonesKeymasterHi John,
I’ve not come across any red hoods being on offer for the XJS convertible, so I’ve taken a look at the Paul Skilleter book you mention
That photo shows to me what looks like the Tan roof, not red. The an almost exact example belongs to a Hess & Eisenhardt version of the XJS Convertible – it appears in their advertising literature (all be it from a different angle with a glider behind it).
I think I have seen other examples with the Tan hood, but not Red.Laurence
Laurence JonesKeymasterRegarding the Dashboard lights, I’ve just posted and article in our site’s Articles section, about how I improved them on my car.
The article section can be found in the right-hand menu on this site’s Home page

Laurence JonesKeymasterThat’s good news Martin – electrical shorts are a nightmare to find at the best of times, let alone up within the dash.
Laurence
Laurence JonesKeymasterNothing wrong with the Rover SD1 – I had a one for several years – replaced the 2.6 with the 3.5 🙂
Laurence JonesKeymasterThe silver ones as we cheapest – just to see what they’re like. If they’re any good I might spray black if they don’t look right (but should be OK as silver)
Laurence
Laurence JonesKeymasterThanks John.
Thanks Mark, I’ve splashed the cash on a set to try – just got to wait a month for the slow boat from China to bring them to me 🙂
I’ll let you know how I get on.
Laurence
Laurence JonesKeymasterHi Peter,
I guess you either like the XJS or not, and when you do some of us get the urge to have more than one (nothing wrong with that). There are several folks on this site, like myself, that have both a Convertibles or a Cabriolet and a Coupe (or various combination).

Laurence JonesKeymasterLaurence JonesKeymasterOuch that’s a lot of money, circa £1,400
Laurence JonesKeymasterHi Jon,
On a nice steady run, in my experience, you’d ikely get 25mpg (if it were a V12 5.3l then you’d be getting around 17mpg).
One thing to be cognisant of interpretation of reading the fuel gauge in your can and how much fuel is in the tank when it reads 1/4 full. Until you’re sure of what you see then don’t trust that 1/4 on the gauge is actually a 1/4 of the tank of fuel – fill up early and carry spare fuel (though you really don’t want to run out as it will suck up crud from the bottom of the tank that you really don’t want distributing throughout the fuel system).
Better safe than sorry on your long trip to Isle of Mann to fill up regularly and then when on home turf to let the fuel levels lower and estabilish for yourself when exactly on the gauge the light comes on and how much there is in the tank at that point).
Hope that helps – have a safe and uneventful, though enjoyable journey

Laurence JonesKeymasterHi John,
If you recall the 1st joined date was only introduced about a month after the site went live, so not all the members details had that field populated. I’ve just spent a happy couple of hours going through the member’s data and have back-populated that field. Therefore whenever the sort is undertaken for any of the fields on the page no members disappear now from the displayed view.
The list count now shows 126 (I’ve removed my test account from the list), that’s 125 Cabriolet Members and 1 administrator (Robin) which can’t be removed.
Cheers,
Laurence
Laurence JonesKeymasterThis meet up event has been rescheduled to Saturday 17th June.
Please let me know if you are able to attend, so that I can reserve space for us all in the cafe.
Laurence
Laurence JonesKeymasterHi John,
The functionality you’re seeking is already in place. If I could just remind you, if you click on the column header 1st it will sort the whole member list with the newest members at the top by their date of joining.
Laurence
Laurence JonesKeymasterBob and Gerben,
Glad it’s all worked out well.
Mark,
Is the unsatisfactory bulb the dipped beam or full beam – Gerben might not want the dipped beam bulbs he has just got from Bob, as his Cabriolet is LHD.
