If it works well then could be a good option. I imagine will be similar to the Jag ‘Econocruise’ early system which was also an aftermarket fitment originally, before being offered by Jaguar as an option in production.

Modern electronics might have benefits too.

Let us know how you get on if you go that route, be most interested.

Parts References for 3.6l Cruise Control – poor pics but shows where to get the info!

Hi Trevor, Cruise was indeed an option on 3.6l XJS both cabriolet and coupe. The earlier system was AE Econocruise but in Feb 1987 was replaced with the more sophisticated Hella ‘computer’ cruise. (Source Skilleter – says vin 108285 roughly)
Same 1987.5 model year revamp they introduced wood veneered ski-slope.

If yours is a 1987 it might be quite straightforward..

The system is however a little more complex than you might think at first sight but I believe should be retrofitable to cars post Feb 1987. I don’t think anyone would recommend the Econocruise version but the Hella by all accounts is a reliable and sophisticated system.

          Components:
Ski-slope switch & mounting, ECU which fits under passenger foot board next to main 3.6l engine ECU, brake pedal actuating double switch (and single clutch switch on manual cars), solenoid vacuum valve fits on N/S inside engine bulkhead, Actuator bellows, tubing and linkage to throttle.
I haven’t mentioned wiring or relays either but I think will be already in harness on post 1987 cars. I cannot confirm that but my Sept 1987 certainly has an extra plug in footwell next to location for the cruise ECU.

The 3.6l (& 4.0l) models use a totally different system to that on the V12 cars so no major components are the same (happy to be corrected)

My own cab does not have cruise but I have slowly been gathering the required components myself for future fitting. The ECU latest version is cheap enough at circa £20 brand new off eBay, console switches quite costly as are the bellows as often second hand ones look poor. Double brake pedal switches (cruise and brake light) are more difficult to find but I’m sure if you approached one of the known Jag breakers like ‘JustXJS’ at Derby they could source all the necessary parts.
The parts aren’t really that costly.
The missing ingredient is whether the existing wiring loom has the connections already there and I cannot confirm that myself yet..

If anyone has actually done the modification on a post 1987 I would also be most interested to hear of any pitfalls..

          Regards, Robin

It’s a pity about current exchange rates too! Makes USA imports very costly now.

I’m more familiar with my 3.6l than the v12’s, hopefully be someone with better expertise than I on V12 problems.

Has it been running ok until recently or is it the first time you have run for a while – i.e. been put away for winter months?

Good news is it starts! If it is relates to engine temp there are a few clues maybe. First is the engine temp sensor (different to temp gauge sensor) which inputs to ECU, giving cold start enrichment. They can go faulty and give incorrect resistance reading – or even the wiring connector gets corroded.
When it dies will it restart immediately or do you have to wait?

Always difficult to diagnose remotely but firstly what year (’88?), engine v12 or which 6cyl.
Do you get an error code on the computer trip readout?

Bleasie, yes after studying your picture I checked out sources last evening and ordered 5litres of WD40 and a Hoselock sprayer from Amazon. A lot cheaper than I expected..

I’m mainly concerned with getting my engine bay up to scratch and normally use a lot of WD40 aerosols previously.
Body & wheels I have some favourites already but will try the ‘ultra violet’ wash/wash instead of Autoglym too when weather improves.
Do you use Red Thunder for engine cleaning?

Thanks for all the details most appreciated.

Check your part number in Jag Parts Catalouge as on my 1987 Cab it is different to std coupe. I bought a replacement last year direct from Jag Main Dealer £52 from memory. Have a look on Jag Heritage Parts.
Mine was really gummed up with ‘varnish’ and showed full, tried to repair but couldn’t so replaced with genuine Jag part, reasonable price – some things are!

For some reason can’t add a pic at moment but Bleasie’s picture of 70GXX will be the correct size stripe as in eBay listing, probably in a light grey but maybe someone with earlier Parts cat can reference colour for Regent Grey/Saville leather 1985 model..
Determine correct Pantone colour and then talk to the eBay seller as to feasibility..
                          Hey Presto coachlines in post!

Hi Roland, Not seen any original coachlines at dealers but a few occasionally on eBay. The pic above of an eBay listing is for reproduction coachlines.
The originals came in 8 sections and cost £250/300 many variations but mainly pre HE ( no side repeater indicators), pre 1986 were thicker stripes as per eBay listing above, 1986/87 were thinner and the Sportspack different again with colour combinations.
My Jaguar Parts Catalouge is a later version – suits my 1987 car – so I can’t see your correct colour for a 1985 model.

Have a look in your Parts Catalouge, right at front afterbody/trim combinations. If you don’t have a Jag Parts Catalouge buy one as best £30 you will spend, honest!!
I’ll post a pic of the colour chart for later cars but doesn’t show your specific grey..

There is a section in the new site for ‘Articles’ – presently one on folding soft top and another on data computer.
                                Just a thought..

I’ll maybe try and find articles in JEC archives as a refresher course would be useful for me.

I didn’t even know you could buy WD40 ‘not in a can’ – what sort of hand pump did you use?
Probably not cost effective for my usage levels but I’ll maybe look into bulk costs.

Really impressed with the engine bay of your XK8 – a great credit to you. I just wish I could get my XKR to that level, I am trying hard and already bought shares in WD40 company.
How about an article on concours engine prep – I’m sure you wrote one for JEC years back that said something like ‘results only limited by number of cases of WD40 you can afford!’
Maybe you have a copy somewhere? Apologies if I’m mistaken..

Bryan, I don’t know of one, other than mine which I bought secondhand in 2001. Only bought by chance as was buying a replacement cab hood advertised in JEC from chap called Mike Coxhead in Berks. who was moving to Rennes. I remember well as he also had a Red Lister XJS convertible with 15k on it trying to sell then for £28k.
Did a deal for hood and Deflector so it cost little more than the hood price.

Not seen one since on eBay either so probably quite rare item now. If I see one I will

As you say these were only sold for use with the hardtop fitted when targa panels are removed, mounts under the targa clips and is nicely made.
I’ll stick a few other pics on my general photos as I know you will be interested if you have gone to the trouble to make your own.
Only came in one colour I believe but mine is both doeskin mainly and the release panel in a slightly darker hue.
