I’m going to be brave and attempt to re-veneer my Burr Elm Panel as the existing Veneer had cracked and began to flake off in places. I couldn’t find a decent replacement so I’ve stripped off the old and will attempt to restore it. Fingers crossed ? all will turn out well

My Panel with flaking veneer prior to removal and start of restoration. Is that Elvis I see in the Clock? ……

Have you got some replacement veneer Mark Thorley ( @m164 ) ?

Are you using heat resistant glue – just thinking of things getting hot in direct sun !

I’m really interested in the lacquer stage – I’ve some pieces where the veneer is good but the lacquer has pealed off.

                Hi Laurence.

Yes I got a few sheets of veneer rather than just one in case my first attempts don’t go to plan .

I’ll likely use a very thin layer of clear tiger seal to bond it to the metal panel, can’t see that going anywhere thereafter, that stuff is awesome.

To be honest I did try to re laquer an area where the veneer was good but the original laquer is very thick and i reckon it would take quite a few applications to get it back to original, even then it might not look right. If your veneer is all intact the best solution would be to completely remove the existing laquer and then re-apply, that way you don’t risk all the effort potentially going to waste.

If all goes well with mine I’ll have some veneer left over surplus to requirements you are welcome to

Nearly there, another coat of colour varnish then topcoat of laquer.
                  It’s a slow process…..but a result
