Brakes squishy after not using for a few weeks

The brakes have faded and gone a bit squishy on my RHD XJS Convertible, after the car’s been sat for a month.

[photo 201] so it’s of to the garage after work for some remedial work.

  That’s a nice looking Machine you have there Laurence. You probably need a change of brake fluid , and a good bleed through. The weather is very good here today, which is quite unusual for this time of year

  I’ll know later in the week, once the garage have taken a look – initial thoughts are that the fluid is passing around the piston in the master cylinder, and then when I pump the brakes it all comes back round again. It’s the last bit of the braking system that hasn’t been replaced so is the likely candidate.

  Don’t let the brakes wear down to the metal or you will have to drop the rear end to replace them – an eight hour plus job – that cost me $3,500 Canadian. This happened on my first trip out (I was told the brakes pulverized from the previous owner not driving it for five years) and they noticed the retr seals leaking and had to wait six weeks for new ones from Michigan. When I went to pick up the car they asked me how long I had had the Jag. “Not as long as you have” I replied.

  That is definately not a garage bill I’d like – circa £2,100 UK pounds. For that money I could get new carpet, wood veneer and the Targa and Roof refurbished on my Cabriolet…..

  Picked up my car from the garage tonight – all sorted.
  
  Turns out the fluid was going around the piston rubbers in the master cylinder, effectively making them completely non effective. Once had pumped them the fluid moved back around the rubbers and sort of gave some braking power again.
  
  New Brake Master cylinder fitted and good firm effective brakes now – and the bill wasn’t too bad either.
