Replacing Front Quater light window rubber

Hi All,

I’ve been asked about what needs to be done to replace the front quarter door window’s rubber seals (which I think you can still get).

I’d assume it would be similar to how I’ve been told the rear window rubbers can be changed (which are in stock in the Club Shop), which I’ve listed below :

– Cut around old rubber until the glass can be pushed out from the inside
– Remove old rubber
– Fit new rubber
– Lubricate rubber
– place a piece of thin cord all around the inside edge of the rubber with the two ends sticking out of the longest side
– Place glass in place on the longest edge, “trapping” the ends of the cord that is sticking out
– Whilst pushing on the glass, as if it were to pop into place on the rubber, slowly pull out the cord around the glass – letting the glass in behind the rubber seal
– do this all the way round the glass until the window is fully home

Can anyone here please let me know the correct method please (i.e is the above right).

  I am a new member and have an XJ-SC. I have. Just replaced the front quarter light window seals and the correct way is to remove the frame that supports the window. The screws that hold the frame are shown in an original repair manual. Sealant will make it slightly difficult to pull the frame away but I think is easily done. The longest job is cleaning off the old sealant.
  
  One major thing to think about is the condition of the quarter light support plates that fit at the bottom of the glass that are attached to the door. These are usually very rusted and need replacing. I managed to get 2 from a breakers yard as they are difficult to find. I have 1 reasonable spare one if needed.

  When replacing the door Qtr light seal you have to consider the condition of the window support. The window support plate attaches to the door by 2 screws and usually they are very corroded depending on the condition of the seal. They are a rare item to find in good condition, even from a breakers yard. The one in the picture is the drivers side panel and you will see it is shaped to the contour of the door. I was lucky and managed to get the last 2 from grub locker. This one is pitted but can be reused. Fortunately the rust is only confined to this piece and not the door frame, mainly because it sits on a bed of mastic. To complete the qtr light seal replacement took me about an hour and this includes taking off the door card. A little more time was given to applying wax oil to the door inner panels.

  Has anyone replaced the rear qtr light seals as it looks as if there are similar plates below the window which are obsolete part No’s BAC7739/38. Fortunately my seals look ok but I wonder what condition these plates are in.
