Australian member Shane Bowering recounts the extraordinary early life of his 1990 Jaguar XJS Convertible. Part one follows the car from its origins in Japan through its years under the ownership of mining entrepreneur Nathan Tinkler, before circumstances saw it largely forgotten yet immaculately preserved. The story sets the stage for the car’s eventual transformation in Brisbane, explored in part two.

This is the first of a two-part article written by Australian member Shane Bowering, documenting the remarkable journey of his 1990 Jaguar XJS Convertible. Part one traces the car’s life from its early years in Japan, through high-profile ownership, and how it eventually came into Shane’s care. Part two concludes the story in Brisbane as the car is transformed in stages under his ownership.

The Beginning — From Japan to an Australian Mining Magnate

This is the story of my Japan-delivered, Australian-imported 1990 Jaguar XJS Convertible.

Little is known about the car’s history between 1990 and 2006 while it remained in Japan, as no documentation from that period survives. What is known is that the car was imported into Australia in 2006.
