When will your car become UK MOT Exempt ?
Have you been wondering about whether your car is due to be MOT exempt soon in the UK. Hopefully the information I’ve found is of some use.

MOT exemption for classic cars (including many XJS models)
Cars generally become MOT-exempt once they reach 40 years old, provided:
- The vehicle was first registered more than 40 years ago
- No substantial modifications have been made in the last 30 years
(e.g. engine swaps or major structural changes)
For UK-supplied cars, eligibility is based on the original first registration date.
Important: Even if your car is MOT-exempt, you must still tax it every year.
Historic vehicles may pay £0 tax, but they must always be kept roadworthy.
Using a vehicle in a dangerous condition can result in a £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points.
When taxing an MOT-exempt vehicle, you must declare the exemption by completing a
V112 (Declaration of MOT exemption) via the DVLA website or a participating Post Office.
Many owners still choose to have a voluntary MOT or annual inspection, which can be a sensible
way to maintain safety and peace of mind.
