In the beginning

The club has grown and changed over the years from its initial online launch as the XJS Soft Tops Club in December 2016. It can trace it’s beginnings back an online club that was formed in mid 2014, by Laurence Jones (who still runs the XJS Soft Tops Club), for owners and enthusiasts of the soft top version of Jaguar’s XJS car. Laurence had bought himself a 1985 XJ-SC cabriolet and looking around the internet felt that there was something missing, a gap that needed filling, to bring together those who felt the soft top version of the Jaguar XJS was something special. Not just the XJ-SC Cabriolet, but the later XJS Convertible and the other custom built versions.

There had been for many years the the International Cabriolet Register, formed and run by John B, which had been tracking the existence and whereabouts of as many of the 3015 Jaguar XJ-SC Cabriolets that had been produced. Information could be obtained from the register about when you’re car was produced along with information about how many of the same model or colour configuration existed. There was, and still is, the wider Jaguar ownership and driver clubs, and of course there’s the Jaguar XJS Club.

Laurence realised that many of the questions he was asking about his XJ-SC Cabriolet were specific to that model, and so couldn’t easily be answered on existing on line Jaguar online forums. There was a need to bring together owners and enthusiast of the XJ-SC Cabriolet, and also the XJS Convertible, so that they could share unique information and experience about their cars. To build a community that could help each other and who could meet up at shows around the world, bringing their soft top cars alongside others.

The start of the XJS Soft Tops Club

From those early beginnings in 2014 the XJS Soft Tops Club was officially launched in December 2026, marked by the release of a brand new Club Website. The Club’s ambitions then, and now, was to bring together owners and enthusiasts of the two Jaguar XJS soft top models, the XJ-SC Cabriolet and the XJS Convertible.

The Club has always been inclusive of all soft top XJS cars, whether they be Jaguar built XJ-SC Cabriolets or XJS Convertibles, official Hess and Eisenhardt built Convertibles and or limit production runs of specialist bodyshop conversions of XJS Coupes into a soft top.

Many of the initial members were XJ-SC Cabriolet Owners, who’d previously registered their interest with the International Cabriolet Register. The Club’s Membership has steadily kept rising over the subsequent years, and as at November 2025 was over 900 members from all around the world.

Members over the years have been brought together with fellow enthusiasts at shows and events and local meet ups, with many long term friendships being formed.

The Club’s website

To keep up with the technology and member’s changing attitudes to the internet and social media, the Club’s website has gone through many changes and enhancements over the years. New features have been launched, some have been developed into what we have today and some have been dropped either due to a better feature being available or member’s appetite for it wained. The club launched its own page on Facebook, which enabled the club to connect with a whole new group of enthusiasts that might never have come across the Club’s website.

The latest relaunch of the XJS Soft Tops Club’s website was in November 2026, when a new feeling of freshness and positivity was injected across the site. Laurence was able to revamp and reconfigure it to be an easier and more accessible website, better suited to the current trends of members accessing the web more from their mobile phones and tables.

The Club’s website now includes a range of member centric features, galleries and member’s car albums, along with 4 discussion forums to connect members with the information or parts that they need.
