      Hello all,

      My car is a 1990 XJ-S 5.3 convertible.

As I have an issue with the speedometer on my XJ-S and want to replace the bulbs at the same time, I’m trying to remove the instruments cluster from my car. I read several threads here and in some other forums, they all seem to indicate that the only “things” that need to be removed are 3 screws, one on each side of the trim surrounding the cluster and one at the top middle of it. Done that but I can’t remove the surrounding, as I don’t want to pull too heavily I was wondering if there was something hidden somewhere. My fealing is that the surrounding is still fixed by something on the lower left and rigth flatĀ parts.

Someone having experience with this? Any advice welcome.

      Thank you.

      Guy

As far as I can remember there are only three screws but you must release the one in the middle at the top first. Once the short piece of plastic trim is removed you will be able to pull the two half pieces of trim down from the top centre line as I believe that the bottom sections of the trim are tucked down the side slightly, making it difficult to remove them. Good luck with it.

      Hi Guy,

I haven’t removed the instrument cluster on my ’87, but the manual says to remove the driver’s underscuttle casing first … not sure why as it doesn’t appear to impact the lower edge of the instrument cluster!

      Cheers, Ian.

      Hi Guy

Following on from what Paul and Ian suggested, I was wondering if the article I wrote about improving the dashboard lighting is of any help to you – https://xjs-soft-tops.com/articles/improving-xjs-dashboard-lights/

      Cheers,

      Laurence

      Hi Laurence,

First of all sorry for being so slow to answer … been away and a bit too busy here.

In fact your acticle helped in combination with some others I found on the Jag-Lovers forums.
After having removed the cluster all I did was replacing the small bulbs by led ones, clean the copper contacts and put everything
in place again … since then I drove about 2000kms and no issues anymore.

What I still have to do is replace the bigger bulbs, the one residing behind the green domes, last I looked at it I was unable to remove
everything to gain access to them … need to take a second/closer look at it.

When I have some spare time, in the coming months maybe, I’ll try to get back to you with some comments on your procedure, to
me some comments could be added for novice people like me.

      Regards,

      Guy
