Question: My 1987 XJ-SC has four seats, it was delivered with rear seats from the dealer when it was new. (according to the documents) How can i find out if it was delivered with four seats from the factory or if this was put in by the dealer?
Anyone ?

Hi,
Everthing I have read states that they were built as a 2 seater with the lockable compartments in the rear. Maybe other members can say whether they had an option to add the seats. I am sure Bleasie will confirm either way.

Just read that the only one that came out of the factory as a 4 seater was princess Diane’s car, and others were possibly a dealer fit using the Coupe seats.

Hi Per Arne Harefallet @perarnechonica-no
Alan’s correct, the only car that had factory fitted rear seats was Princess Diana’s. Her car though was always fitted with the rear Hardtop rather than the fold down hood – possibly as there was concern that someone in the back of the car might stand up and could injure themselves on the Targa Top’s T-bar if the car suddenly stopped.
Many owners wanted 4 seats, so many of the dealerships were happy to supply a Cabriolet with seats fitted from a Coupe – with the deal arranging to have the rear locker box out taken out and rear seats fitted. All the mouonting points were present in the car for rear seats and seat belts, as the Cabriolets were converted from near complete Coupes when they were built.
If you look around, you will see ltos of different rear seat arrangments in different Cabriolets – this is I think due to the dealer fitting whatever Coupe Seats they could obtain.

Hi Steven Foster @fossie
It would be interesting to find out where you read that snipped of information, as popular belief is that the only one Jaguar Produced from the factory is Lady Diana’s Cabriolet – the rest were after sale dealer conversions etc.

Just joining the conversation, those belts look like the ones in the back of mine, not inertia style but pull to tighten Steven.

Hi Jon,
I assume from what you are saying is that a factory fitted one would be inertia?

Alan,
Looking at the picture from Steven, if in theory that was one that came from the factory then those seat belts are not the normal inertia style that the front has, but a pull and tighten, but could also depend upon what was around?? Although I remember the coupe my dad used to have had inertia sea belts in the back and it was a similar age to the cab.

In the sales invoice from Mann Egerton dated 21/09/87 the price for my XJ-SC 3.6 Auto RHD was 19,866 including ‘factory fitted extras’.
There was then a charge of 434.71 with a sales code ‘DI’ – I wonder if that was for the back seats but maybe something else entirely.
I remember with the initial paperwork when I bought her in 1990 there was a slip of paper saying something about insurance claim non-liability as the seats were not standard but, sadly, this bit of paper seems to have disappeared from my file.
