I am new to this site but have two on-going problems. firstly my car VIN (last 6 digits) 142922 was registered in august 1987 and hence built probably early ’87. It is therefore 30 years old and its hood and covering to Targa Panels has had its day. Does anyone know who has or makes Cabby hoods?
A second and unrelated concern ( not associated with the roof) is my horn has failed ( I am no mechanic – quite the opposite) and my mechanic feels something has dropped out/off within the bottom of the steering column but he cannot see what or where. Does anyone know how the horn unit connection are organised down it the steering column. currently as a temporary measure he has put me a horn button just on the bottom of the dashboard; so the pad on the steering wheel does nothing at all at present. We cannot see the physical detail of the set up within the large Service Manual, only an electrical circuit diagram which does on show the physical pieces of metal etc used to make the circuit.
Any help by those much more knowledgeable than me would be much appreciated !
Kind Regards Michael Hampton

Morning Michael Hampton
I suspect at some point in the past the standard steering wheel had been replaced with something like a Nardi or similar wheel and the metal rod in the column that gives the horn push its connection removed. Upon refitting the standard steering wheel this rod was not reinstalled. Hence no horn!
As it happens I’ll be working on my own car today/tomorrow replacing my steering wheel so I’ll add a photo of the rod etc I’m referring to. I don’t have a spare unfortunately but maybe Laurence does from the Cabby he is breaking.
Regarding your Targa panels, I might be able to help you there also. I’ll get back to you on that. I know someone who is breaking a car. I’ll have a word

Michael Hampton Here you are (parts catalogue)
Photos of the rod, official word is guide assembly (24 or 25 depending if your car is the 5.3 or 3.6) but I suspect the part is exactly the same either way. Jaguar part number C38916 or DAC2882 as shown. But check if Laurence if you need this part in case he has one

Responding to Mark Thorley and thanks to him for his guidance and the picture of the assembly for the horn. I should point out I used to have a working horn and it has recently failed and the steering wheel is I believe original ( leather bound).
We have no good Jaguar garage near for these old cars so I use a local man who likes working on Classic cars he has found the rod but thinks a bit is missing from further down the column. I have an XJS Service Manual but so far have not located the diagram that Mark kindly shows – if he sees this and can give me a source for the diagram ( perhaps a page number) I will resume my investigation for it possibly in my inch thick manual!

Thank you Laurence. I have just sent an Email with photos to see if they can assist. Also I got the impression you might have parts from a vehicle you are dis-assembling that might solve my horn problem – is that so?
I will come back about Auto-Trim if they can help with the hood.
Kind Regards Mike Hampton
