Does anyone know If the brightwork on the Cabriolet can be restored? I’m mainly referring to the rear boot badges and jaguar wording on the rear light carrier which are made entirely of plastic. Can they be repainted/sprayed bright silver with careful preparation and if so what can be used to give them that original chrome look again. Thanks:)

Hi Mark
Something I’ve considered is to have these items powder coated, as you can get chrome powder coating powder. You can mask items off and only powder coat sections – so might be possible with care to have chrome front face on black badges
I’m hoping to buy myself what’s required, for doing small items like the badges, sometime over the next month or so and give it a try myself, I’ll let you know.

Hi Laurence,I don’t see that powder coating would work as it involves serious heat which would just melt the badges as they are made of plastic. There is a chrome mirror finish spray paint available however the preparation in masking the badge would take a long time given the intricacies in the badges design. Might just chrome spray the entire badge and not bother with the black edging

Hi Mark,
There are different types of Powder Coating, and there are ones that don’t use very high heat levels – indeed I’ve seen them demonstrated with a powder coated Coke bottle, and those bottles use quite a low melt temperature plastic.
It will need some testing (trial and error) but I’m hopeful. I’ll let you know 🙂

Out of interest Is that the ‘powder coating’ system that Frosts ( US based restoration products company) sell?
On a different front – heat cure powder coating – I have found Worcester Powder Coatings at Pershore, Worcestershire a really helpful and low cost solution if you have a batch of items needing blasting and powder coating. Worth travelling even IMHO.

I wonder how many of us have plastic boot badges which have faded/scratched ‘Chrome Paint’… I would imagine quite a few considering these parts are now 30+ years old. Maybe we could all club in and get a deal for the lot doing. A ‘new’ looking badge would look great
